Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila blanco preferably silver for clarity
  • 1 oz lime juice freshly squeezed for brightness
  • 0.5 oz orange liqueur such as Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 1 tsp activated charcoal powder food grade, finely sifted to avoid lumps
  • 1 oz simple syrup preferably homemade
  • Black sea salt black salt for rimming the glass
  • Ice as needed ice crushed or cubed, enough to fill shaker

Equipment

  • Shaker
  • Rimming plate or small bowl

Method

  1. Begin by preparing your glasses: pour the black sea salt onto a small plate. Moisten the rim of each glass with a lime wedge and dip into the salt to coat evenly, then set aside.
  2. Fill a shaker with ice, then add the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, simple syrup, and activated charcoal powder.
  3. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds, until the mixture is well-chilled and the charcoal is evenly dispersed, creating a dark, swirling liquid.
  4. Strain the cocktail into your prepared glasses, watching as the liquid swirls with deep black color and a glossy finish.
  5. Garnish with a lime wheel or twist, and serve immediately to enjoy the smoky, citrusy flavors with a striking visual effect.

Notes

Ensure the activated charcoal is food grade and sifted well to avoid gritty textures. Adjust the amount of charcoal to control the darkness of the drink. For added flair, you can rim the glass with a mix of black salt and shimmer edible glitter.
