Edible Brain Jello

This dish is a gelatin-based treat molded into the shape of a human brain, using flavored gelatin and food coloring. The final product has a firm, slightly jiggly texture with a detailed, brain-like appearance that is both eerie and playful. It involves dissolving gelatin, adding colors and flavors, and chilling until set to achieve a realistic, wobbly shape.

Ingredients

  • 3 packs gelatin powder (unflavored) about 7 grams per pack
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 bottle red food coloring or mix of reds for realistic effect
  • 1 cup flavored gelatin (like cherry or strawberry) for added flavor and color

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Silicone brain mold
  • Saucepan
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Pour the unflavored gelatin powder into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the boiling water gradually, whisking continuously until the gelatin fully dissolves and the mixture is clear.
  3. Stir in the cold water and add several drops of red food coloring, mixing until the color is vibrant and evenly distributed.
  4. Pour the flavored gelatin into a separate bowl and microwave briefly if needed to loosen it, then whisk until smooth.
  5. Combine the flavored gelatin with the unflavored gelatin mixture, stirring thoroughly to blend flavors and colors.
  6. Lightly spray the silicone brain mold with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  7. Pour the gelatin mixture carefully into the mold, filling all the crevices without overfilling.
  8. Place the mold on a tray and transfer it to the refrigerator, chilling for at least 4 hours or until fully set and firm.
  9. Once set, gently flex the silicone mold to loosen the gelatin brain, then carefully invert onto a serving plate.
  10. Adjust any cracks or imperfections with a small knife or toothpick for a more realistic brain texture.
  11. Chill the final piece for a short time before serving to ensure it holds its shape, then carve or decorate as desired for extra gory effect.

Notes

Use bright red food coloring for a more gory look. For extra realism, add vein-like details with piping gel or red icing after unmolding.
