Ingredients

  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened preferably at room temperature
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp paprika for color and flavor
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh chives optional, for added flavor
  • 1 package pretzel sticks for spider legs
  • 8 pieces googly eyes or edible eyes
  • 1 bar dark chocolate or chocolate melts for coating pretzel legs, optional
  • 1/4 cup black olives, sliced for the spider's eyes if not using googly eyes

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Rubber spatula
  • Plastic wrap
  • Baking sheet
  • Small knife

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, paprika, and chopped chives (if using). Mix until smooth and creamy, with no lumps, and the mixture has a slightly sticky texture.
  2. Shape the cheese mixture into a large, rounded ball in the center of a plate, smoothing the surface with a spatula. This will be the spider's body.
  3. If using, melt some dark chocolate or chocolate melts briefly in the microwave until smooth, then let it cool slightly. Dip the pretzel sticks into the melted chocolate to coat one end, or leave them plain if preferred.
  4. Insert the coated or plain pretzel sticks into the cheese ball radiating outward to mimic spider legs, evenly spaced around the body. Gently press them in so they stay secure and resemble legs.
  5. Place googly eyes or small edible eyes onto the front of the cheese ball to create the spider’s face. If using olives, slice them into small rounds and affix with toothpicks or gently press onto the cheese surface for spooky eyes.
  6. Arrange any remaining pretzels, olives, or decorations around the base of the cheese ball for extra creepy effect. Chill the assembled cheese ball in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to firm up before serving.
  7. Once chilled, serve your Halloween Spider Cheese Ball on a platter, ready for party snacking. The crunchy pretzel legs add a fun texture, and the creamy cheese provides a flavorful contrast—all in a playful, spooky presentation.
