  • 1 cup shredded cheese cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend
  • 1 lb ground beef or your preferred protein
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 large onion sliced into rings
  • 1 cup fried onion rings store-bought or homemade
  • 2 tbsp olive oil for cooking
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 1 egg egg for binding

Equipment

  • Baking dish or ovenproof skillet
  • Frying pan
  • Spatula
  • Oven
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Method

  1. Cook the ground beef in a frying pan over medium heat until browned and cooked through, then season with salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Transfer the cooked beef to a bowl and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Lightly toast or bake the slices of bread until they are crispy and golden on edges; this helps create a sturdy base.
  3. Spread a thin layer of cooked ground beef evenly over each bread slice, then sprinkle generously with shredded cheese.
  4. Stack the assembled slices into a baking dish or ovenproof skillet, pressing down gently to compact slightly.
  5. Drizzle olive oil over the top, then sprinkle sliced onions and fried onion rings evenly across the surface.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk the egg and brush it over the top of the layered dish to help with browning and binding.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 15-20 minutes, until bubbly, cheese is melted, and edges are crispy.
  8. Remove from oven and let sit for a couple of minutes; then slice into hearty squares or wedges.
  9. Serve hot, embracing the messy layers, crunchy toppings, and cheesy goodness.
